Keywords and Search Terms

I embarked on my exploration into my personal inquiry question with a sit down conversation with Jennifer Branch and later with both Jennifer and Joanne de Groot. My goal was to exchange ideas on my capping paper topic, discuss possible directions and how it might look and to inquire about names to pursue. This goal was surpassed as Jenn and Joanne gave me with a wealth of information and suggestions. Five pages of notes later, I headed off to U of A's library to begin my search.

It was from these rich conversations, and later my research, that I learned there was very little information specifically on the role of a teacher librarian in an inner city school. Using the advice of my colleagues, I began looking in the following directions.

Research and articles related to the role of the teacher librarian and its impact on student achievement.

Keywords: teacher-librarian, student achievement, library media specialist (as TL's are called in the US), school libraries, librarians, learning

Research and articles related to poverty and how it affects student achievement.

Keywords: poverty, student learning, student achievement, inner city, school effectiveness, federal funding, achievement tests

Research and articles related to the process having the greatest positive impact on learning.

Keywords: inquiry learning, guided inquiry, learning, technology changes, inquiry method, schools, school libraries

At first I looked up a combination of keywords with AND not OR and was presented with 8,781 choices. Realizing I had to narrow my search I chose Scholarly Journals, found on the tool bar in Proquest Educational Database. This narrowed it down to just over 5,000 articles. I scanned the first few pages to determine if any jumped out at me. I read a few of these article and bookmarked others in Diigo. I further narrowed my search by clicking on the side bar in Proquest. By checking the relevant boxes in the 'Find more documents like this' section, allowed me to dig deeper into my topic. By using this method I was able to determine other keywords that I had not initially incorporated.
